From Shark Tank to over 1 million users – How Phil Dumas & team brought UniKey to market

By: David Brim

When Phil Dumas was young, he knew there had to be a better way to open the front door to his family’s home than a physical key. So in 2010, he took thousands of dollars he had saved and founded this Orlando business.

Source: www.bizjournals.com

My $.02s…

Phil Dumas and his team at UniKey have done a remarkable job starting and scaling their business right here in Orlando. I was in the same UCF Incubator as Phil when his company was first starting off. It has been wonderful to see the gigantic growth and accomplishments they have achieved (they recently surpassed 1M users this summer!).

Their company provides innovative access control technology that enables people to gain keyless entry to their office or home. Admins can also choose who else can gain entry and when. For instance, you can send a one time use digital key to a neighbor to let your dog out. Or provide access to a maid on certain days or hours to clean your home.

He pitched on SharkTank and was offered a deal from several of the Sharks. Our entrepreneurial community is thankful that Phil has chosen to start and scale his business here in Orlando.

I encourage you to learn more about Unikey and Phil. He is an inspiration to local founders that you can indeed build your dream business here in Central Florida and raise funds you need to scale.

Well done Phil and team! Keep rocking

*Keep an eye on our Orlando Entrepreneurs Podcast, Phil will be joining us as a guest soon!

Walmart showcase to include Orlando Shark Tank star O’Dang Hummus (founder Jesse Wolfe)

By: David Brim

The Orlando company has signed distribution deals with multiple stores in the past few months.

Source: www.bizjournals.com

My $.02s – Great to see my man Jesse Wolfe and Orlando’s O’Dang Hummus achieving such great success. I’ve seen first hand how hard he continues to work to drive his business to new heights. I was one of the Joust Business Plan Competition Judges and screeners when his business was first starting off. I must admit that I didn’t envision a small hummus company selling at local farmers markets could reach such great success. From UCF’s campus & farmers markets to Shark Tank & Walmart (and O’Dang has much more room to grow!).

Jesse is truly an inspiration to any founder that dreams do indeed come true!

If you’d like to learn more about Jesse’s story,  he shared a great interview on our podcast recently.

Keep rocking Jesse and team!

My $.02s…

National Entrepreneur Center president Jerry Ross recently shared his story on an episode of the Smart Hustle Podcast.

The NEC has many educational events for local entrepreneurs and houses 14 organizations in one location including: Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, SCORE, SBDC and more.

In the podcast episode Jerry shared his keys to business success:

  1. You don’t have to do it alone. Get help, build a support network. – “I have never met an entrepreneur that wasn’t willing to help.”
  2. You must have an element of grit and perseverance. – “It takes twice as long as you think and it costs twice as much as you think.”
  3. You must be able to adjust and adapt. – ”It’s the toughest job I’ve ever had, but it’s the best job I’ve ever had.”

Great insight Jerry. Thanks for all you do for our community and local entrepreneurs.

Orlando Recently Ranked #4 in the Nation for Healthcare Startups

By: David Brim

As it stands, Orlando recently ranked #4 in the nation for high-growth healthcare startups…

Source: www.orlandomedicalnews.com

My $.02s – With the recent development of Lake Nona (Medical City) and some of the nations leading hospitals, it is no surprise to hear that we are becoming a hub for healthcare startups. It’s great to see our community gaining focus and specialization in our startup community.  Local industries taking a lead in our community include healthcare, tourism tech, gaming, simulation & defense, space tech, restaurant / hospitality tech, etc

How Innovation and Tourism Work Side By Side in Orlando

By: David Brim

The success of Orlando’s theme park industry and cross-disciplinary technology innovation have led to the region becoming a leading destination for high-tech companies….

Source: www.areadevelopment.com

My $.02s – Tourism put Orlando on the map. It made Orlando a house hold name and helped us develop an infrastructure to handle the substantial amount of tourists that visit every year (which is still improving with our massive improvement projects), but we have so much more to offer than tourism. We are becoming a leader in Simulation / Defense, Gaming, Space Tech and much more. The future is bright!

It’s great to see this article discussing the collaboration between tech and tourism.

Let’s not fight so hard to separate from tourism, but lean in together in a spirit and umbrella of innovation.
More on this topic can be found in my article encouraging Orlando to lean into our culture of innovation and move beyond the “you don’t know the half of it campaign”.

President of Lunar – Interview with Jon Robinson

President of Lunar – Interview with Jon Robinson

About Jon:

Jon Robinson is the president of Lunar, an Orlando-based technology company that offers business consulting services and Software as a Service (SaaS) products to fill the growing void between marketing, sales and technology. Before Jon served as president of a technology company, he led an interesting entrepreneurial journey that includes time as DJ at a nightclub and opening multiple restaurants.

An alumnus of the University of Michigan, Jon worked as a DJ at a local nightclub while attending college. After planning and executing a benefit event for the American Red Cross after 9/11, which resulted in the club’s busiest night in history, Jon learned he had a real knack for marketing.

Jon’s eventual departure from the nightclub led him to his next venture – opening a restaurant. He brought together three other investors to open a 6,500-square-foot restaurant in Rochester Hills, Michigan. This restaurant’s wide success led to the opening of two additional restaurants, and in 2011, Jon sold his shares to tackle a new challenge and completely new industry.

At the height of social media’s boom, Jon set out to develop a way for sports fans to see content related to an upcoming game from a variety of sources and social channels. Jon and his partners developed an aggregation tool that brought together what official sources (broadcasters, players, cheerleaders, the opponent’s players, etc.) were posting to multiple social media channels ahead of a game.

Jon’s foray into social media and experience in developing a standalone platform allowed him to offer a new perspective to Orlando-based Launch That, a digital marketing company. When he joined the company in 2012, every role had a marketing focus, and Jon recognized the need for an operational division to help optimize Salesforce and other tools being utilized by Launch That. Jon’s team experienced so much success building proprietary applications to address sales and marketing needs, they decided to branch off into a completely separate division – Lunar.

Currently, Lunar helps other businesses optimize sales and marketing efforts through technology products and consulting services. Lunar’s first product, Shuttle, manages lead flow from a website to its CRM, and other destinations, making it easy to move data in real time, from any number of inputs into unlimited destinations.

Following Shuttle’s success, Lunar is preparing to launch its second product, Uplink, a text message app that visualizes all conversations in Salesforce and allows messages to be sent from a user’s native messaging app.

While Jon’s entrepreneurial journey may vary from other technology executives, his diverse background helps him lead Lunar in its mission to bridge the gap between sales, marketing and technology. Listen to the full interview above for all the details.

Chance had his start in the game industry by working on Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. After a successful first game, he left to become a co-founder of Infinity Ward, the original studio behind the Call of Duty franchise. Other credits include Call of Duty 2, the entire Modern Warfare series and Ghosts. Chance’s titles have sold over 90 million copies and generated over 4 billion dollars in revenue. Doghead Simulations: Featuring rumii “remote teams run on rumii”

rumii is a social-virtual reality space that enables people to collaborate and communicate in one room from anywhere in the world – as though they’re all in the same physical location. Step into your virtual reality office or classroom. rumii can be used across virtual reality headsets and desktops for collaboration, classes and meetings. Great for remote teams, education and digital nomads.

I, Josh, visited the Doghead Simulations and got to experience rumii, the virtual reality world where I was able to enter a lecture hall where the lesson was about the human heart.  I entered the virtual room and standing in front of me was a 12-foot beating heart that I would walk around and see every valve, vein, and arteries.  Imagine learning about anatomy, math, or even participate in history as a student to get to experience it virtually.

This was a lot of fun to see the applications for education, to feel like you are present with your remote team with a virtual meeting, or just to explore what an x-wing looks like up close (yup I did that too).

About Wellness:

A Mood, Medication, & Health Journal!

Wellness was inspired by the personal experience of a mood disorder diagnosis. While many existing apps tackled the problems of mood and medication tracking separately, there wasn’t an app that aimed to build a comprehensive picture of all of the things that affect your mood, automatically. The first app of its kind, Wellness is the best way to understand your mental health. A fresh, simple, and innovative user interface and integration with Apple Health has earned it featured placement in Apple’s App Store three times since its launch in September 2017.

Ruben Santiago – Wellness, Founder

Ruben builds software worth loving. Exercising both his creative and critical thinking skill set, building software is just one of the ways he enjoys spending his time. He sees the world as a work in progress where anyone with enough willpower can make a difference for the better. Currently, Wellness is both the product and the source of the willpower that energizes him on his mission to help remove the stigma associated with mental health treatment.

Breaking the Mold – Interview with Cassandra Plas

Gezellig Cookies

My name is Cassandra Plas and I grew up eating Dutch cookies. Some you may never have heard of, but maybe have seen before. Cookies like crispy rolled Kniepertjes, coconut macaroons, and spicy speculaas, or “windmill cookies”.

What is “gezellig” ?

Gezellig is a Dutch word that requires a little explanation.  It is pronounced: huh-ZELL-ick and the quickest explanation is “cozy.” However cozy really does not do this word justice. It is so much more than that.

Gezellig really refers to that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you are having a good time with people you like. It’s that weekend with friends at the cottage, or an impromptu gathering after work on a Friday. It’s a well-deserved coffee and breakfast with teammates after a hard workout.  It’s those times with friends that make life awesome!

With everyone leading such busy lives, our mission is just to remind everyone to slow down for a minute and enjoy the moment – preferably with people you like – and maybe even with your favorite beverage and a stroopwafel. Here’s to all your #gezelligmoments

About Cassandra:

“I was born and raised in Canada, the oldest of 3 kids to a Dutch father and American mother.
Growing up as part of a huge extended – and rather artistic – family, I learned to cook at a young age and started sewing when I was 10.

I attended Syracuse University for fashion design, where I was also a member of the rowing team – and varsity women’s 8+ from my sophomore-senior year. I pursued rowing in Victoria, BC for an additional year before dislocating my shoulder and heading back to Ontario to begin my professional career.

I worked in the fashion industry in Toronto for 4 years, before accepting a role in Florida with a Canadian Bank. For the next 13 years, I worked as a Project and Product Manager in Florida, Delaware and Los Angeles across various industries including credit card, toys, and compliance. During this time my husband worked for a Dutch bank, and I started making some of the Dutch style cookies we grew up eating. I experimented on friends and coworkers, but never initially thought it would be a business. It was just something I loved to do.

5 years ago we decided to move back to Florida and started to wonder if the cookies might really be the right product to start a business around. We spent time researching a plan – and launched Gezellig Cookies May 2015.”

Our goal is to bake the best Dutch cookies that we can here in Central Florida, using the best American ingredients that we can, like: organic fair trade sugar and local free range eggs. We also want to offer some non-traditional variations that you would not typically see, such as our Gluten Free original and fun seasonal offerings like maple or pb&j.

We hope you will love our cookies as much as we do.

Adopted at birth by Cuban immigrants, Barbara was raised in Miami and studied Music Theater at New World School of the Arts. She earned a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Economics from FSU. After almost 2 decades in finance, she moved to Orlando and yearned for more creativity. Barbara grew up eating Cuban food with a shovel, so when she sought to infuse purpose and heart into her work, her company was born.

Barbara founded Sweet Babs, a line of Cuban BBQ sauces that are all-natural, vegan and gluten-free, based on her Cuban family’s classic recipes. By combining quality ingredients to create big flavor, Sweet Babs empowers you to bring love to the table, spend less time in the kitchen, and more time with your loved ones. All while cutting calories, carbs and sugar. They are available at retail stores throughout Florida and online for nationwide shipping.

Barbara is active in her community, and on the Board of Directors for Harbor House of Central Florida, an organization that works to eliminate domestic abuse. She is a champion of women in leadership and promotes empowerment of women in all walks of life. She believes women supporting each other is a force to be reckoned with, and in leading by example. That begins at home, with her 7-year-old daughter, who has already deemed herself an artist. Lover of living-out-loud, music, and ice cream, Barbara is a lifelong musician, a freelance writer and mom to a sprightly senior Malti-poo.
